Reminder, Abstract deadline for STOC

Remember that November 10 is the deadline for the "short abstract" for STOC.

More information at the web site, or head to the submissions server.

What's the point of having two separate deadlines for the short abstract and the actual paper?

It lets me weed out the P = NP (or P != NP) papers and get the committee started on paper assignments earlier, so when the papers are in, we can get started right away. (You might have heard, the PC load is pretty heavy for STOC.)

It also forces authors to write an abstract at something before the last minute, but let's leave aside that consideration.

why is the deadline for the abstracts stated on the webpage (monday 11:59 pm) not the same as the deadline on the server (Sunday 11:59 pm)??

Hmmm.... Strange. It must be because the server uses some "international time" that didn't do what I wanted.

I'll try to change it. But in any case, the server stays open until I manually turn it off, so there's no need to worry.

The submission server claims that the "Registration deadline is Mon, 17 Nov 2008 04:59:00 +0000 (UTC)" and the submission deadline is Nov 24. The CFP says the dates are Nov 10 and 24 respectively. I presume the server is wrong and the CFP is right?

How are you going to "weed out" P=NP papers? By telling the authors not to bother submitting? Just curious...

The submssion server/webpage seems to be down. Can you please post something when it is working again?

(It is supposed to be open until tonight midnight EST.)

Anonymous -- please be specific and/or e-mail me directly. The web page seems up to me.
